Answer to the Study questions

Combine the Following Integers

1. +4 and -7. = -3. 4 negatives and 4 positives make 4, leaving 3 negatives remaining. So the answer is -3
2. +8 and -6 and -3 = -1. Combine the negatives together which gives -9. +8 and -9 means that we have 1 extra negative.

Solve the Following Problems
3. (-4) + (+2) + (+3) = (-4) + (+5) = +1
4. (+4) + (+3) + (-9) = (+7) + (-9) = -2
5. (-5) - (+2) - (-7) = (-5) + (-2) + (+7) = 0. We cannot subtract, we can only add. Instead of subtracting, we add the opposite of the number after the subtraction. We add the opposite of -2 which is +2, and we add the opposite of -7 which is +7.
6.(+7) - (+6) - (+4) = (+7) + (-6) + (-4) = -3. We add the opposite of +6, which is -6 and we add the opposite of +4 which is -4 to +7, which gives us -3
For Multiplying and Dividing we do two steps.
i)We count the number of negative signs, if the total is odd then the answer is negative, if the total is even then the answer is positive.
ii)We now calculate the answer but disregard the + and - signs.

7. (+4) x (-8) x (-1) = 4x8 = 32. 32x1 = 32. The answer is +32
8. (+7) x (-2) x (+2) = 7x2 = 14. 14x2 = 28. The answer is -28
9. (-4) ÷ (-2) = 4÷2= 2. The answer is +2
10. (-42) ÷ (-3) ÷ (-3) = 42÷3=12. 12÷3=4. The answer is -4
11. (+7) x (+8) ÷ (+2) = 7x8=56. 56÷2=28. The answer is +28
12. (-6) ÷ (-2) x (+10) =6÷2=3. 3x10=30. The answer is +30
