Answers to the word problems

#1. Lucia's father bought a stock whose value was $49. Over teh nest 5 weeks the value of the stock dropped by $3 per week.
Questions
a) What is the current value of the stock?
The stock started at $49 and dropped $3 per week. We can write an equation to help us solve this problem. (+49) for the starting amount and (-3)x(+5) where -3 is the lost value and +5 is the number of weeks.
(+49) + (-3)x(+5) =
(+49) + (-15) = +34
or the value of the stock is $34

b) What value had the stock lost after 4 weeks?
I will create an equation again. (-3) x (+4) = -12 or the stock had lost $12

#2.Andrew and Megan were on a school quiz team. They were awarded 10 points for each correct answer and they lost 5 points for each incorrect answer. If they answered 15 questions correctly and 7 questions incorrectly what was their final score?

Lets create another equation to help us solve this problem. The correct answers = (+10) x (+15) where +10 is points per question, and +15 is the number answered. For incorrect answers = (-5) x(+7) where -5 is the points per questions and +7 is the number answered incorrectly. Our equation now is
(+10)x(+15) + (-5)x(+7) =
(+150) + (-35) = +115 points.
Megan and Andrew have +115 pts.

#3.Its Monday and its lunch time and you are hungry. You borrow $3 from one friend and $2 from another. On tuesday you bring enough money to repay both friends and still have $4 left over to buy a drink and sandwich. How much money did you bring with you to school? Lets create an equation again. -3 and -2 are the value of money borrowed from friends. +4 is what you have left over so

(-3) + (-2) +(___) = (+4)
(-5) + (____) = (+4)
(-5) + (+9) = (+4)

So the answer is that you brought $9 with you to school on Tuesday.
