### Assignment due Friday February 17th

There have been some students submitting great Brain teasers over the past few weeks and I have collected some of my favorites for everyone to solve.

Your assignment is to solve one of the these four brain teasers that have been submitted by your fellow students.

Remember you only have to try to solve on of the brain teasers to earn your blogger marks for the week

TEASER #1 (Submitted by Renegade, modified by Mr. Reece)

There are three cats on one side of the river and three dogs on the other side. The dogs and cats wish to switch sides of the river. You must therefore transport the dogs and cats using your boat to the opposite sides of the river. Now here are the problem that you must deal with

1 - You can never have more dogs than cats on one side of the river as the dogs will eat the cat.

2- You must always have at least one dog or cat with you everytime that you cross the river.

3 - You can never have more than two animals in the boat at the same time.

TEASER #2 (Submitted by Brandon)

Your objective is to buy exactly 100 farm animals with exactly 100 dollars. You must buy at least 1 of each animal. You may need some paper!

The Costs:

Cows: $10 each

Pigs: $ 3 each

Chickens: $0.50 each

TEASER #3 (posted by Jay)

There is a group of friends wanting to know who is the fastest runner out of all of them. Jane runs the lenghth of the football field in 1 minute. Jill runs the same lenghth but she is 30 seconds faster then Jane. The last two people who ran where Alison and Jen. They ran the same length at the same time but Jen ran 5 seconds faster then Alison. Alison ran the lenghth of the field in 55 seconds. Can you list the times from fastest to slowest?

TEASER #4 (Submitted by Ardia)

The fish market is selling different kinds of fish. But there aren't any prices listed. You ask about the prices, but all the seller will tell you is this:

• A pound of salmon and a pound of bass are $12.

• A pound of bass and a pound of swordfish are $10.

• A pound of salmon and a pound of swordfish are $8.

• A pound of swordfish and a pound of catfish are $5.

• Each price per pound is a whole-dollar amount.

What is the price of each fish?

To answer any of these 4 brain teasers please send a comment to this post stating which question you are answering and your answer. If you have already answered one of these brain teasers or you are the original author you must answer a different brain teaser.

Happy puzzle solving!

This is the answer for teaser #2 Brandons. The Answer is you buy 7 cows($70)then you buy 8 pigs ($24) then you buy 12 chickens ($6)Then when you ass them together it is 100.00. I followed the rules becsaue i did buy one of each. I got the answer buy adding how much one of each would cost and that gave me 13.50 i multiplied that by 7 and that gave me 94.50. I took that number and took it away from 100 and that gave me 5.50 then i took the pigs and the chickens to see if i could buy andymore and i could it gave me 1 more pig and 5 more chickens. thats how i got the answer.

By jay, at 2/11/2006 12:43 PM

Teaser #2

The answer is 20 chickens, 10 pigs, and 7 cows.

If you buy 20 chickens, you multiply 20 get $10.00, multiply 10 pigs for $30.00, and 6 cows for $60.00.

So if you add the totals all together, you have exactly to pay $100.00 and the total of money you have on you is exactly $100.00, so thats how much you need to pay the farm.

1.

You start off with 3 cats and 3 dogs on one side. Then you move 2 dogs to the side where the cats are. Then you move 1 cat over to the side with one dog on it. Then move the 2 cats that are with the 2 dogs to the side with the 1 dog and 1 cat. Then move the last one dog to the side with the 2 dogs.

Then you have 3 dogs on one side and 3 cats on the other.

Brain Teaser #4Answer:A pound of salmon is worth $5.00.

A pound of bass is worth $7.00.

A pound of swordfish is worth $3.00.

A pound of catfish is worth $2.00.

How I got the answer:I started at $3.00 for a pound of salmon and figured that if I had that for salmon, the bass would have to be $9.00, then the Swordfish would have to be $1.00. But $1 plus $3 would equal $4 and not $8. So I followed the same process until I got to $5.00 for a pound of salmon. What made it easier was knowing that the answers would be a whole dollar amount and that it didn't include any cents.

=DBy angelic72, at 2/13/2006 6:27 PM

I am doing the cats and dogs one (where you have to switch the dogs and cats to the opposite side).

You take 2 dogs over to the cats' side. Then you bring 1 cat to the dogs' side. Then you go back and take the other 2 cats because if you leave more dogs with the cats, the dogs will eat it/them. So when you take the other 2 cats over to the other side, there will be 3 cats and 1 dog. Now you can take the last dog to the opposite side and you will have 3 dogs on what used to be the cats' side and you will have 3 cats on what used to be the dogs' side.

Answer to Brain teaser #1

Question:

There are three cats on one side of the river and three dogs on the other side. The dogs and cats wish to switch sides of the river. You must therefore transport the dogs and cats using your boat to the opposite sides of the river. Now here are the problem that you must deal with

1 - You can never have more dogs than cats on one side of the river as the dogs will eat the cat.

2- You must always have at least one dog or cat with you everytime that you cross the river.

3 - You can never have more than two animals in the boat at the same time.

Answer:

First you bring one dog and one cat into the boat. You drop off the dog ,on the cat side, and leave the cat in the boat. Then go back and get another dog. So theres again a cat and a dog in the boat. you drop off the cat and then go across the river to get another cat, then you drop it off (on the dog side). Then you take the other dog and drop them off the the other side then you drop both the dogs off and take the cat and bring it to the other cats.

Question:

Your objective is to buy exactly 100 farm animals with exactly 100 dollars. You must buy at least 1 of each animal. You may need some paper!

The Costs:

Cows: $10 each

Pigs: $ 3 each

Chickens: $0.50 each

Answer:

you buy 5 cows for 50$ (10x5=50)

Then 10 pigs for 30$ (3x10=30)

Finally you buy 40 chickens for 20$ (0.50x40=20)

so..... 30+20+50=100

TEASER #3

There is a group of friends wanting to know who is the fastest runner out of all of them. Jane runs the lenghth of the football field in 1 minute. Jill runs the same lenghth but she is 30 seconds faster then Jane. The last two people who ran where Alison and Jen. They ran the same length at the same time but Jen ran 5 seconds faster then Alison. Alison ran the lenghth of the field in 55 seconds. Can you list the times from fastest to slowest?

I answered this one before but maybe you might forget so here is my answer again:

Fastest to Slowest:

1) Jill because she ran the football field in 30 seconds.

2) Jen because she ran the football field in 50 seconds.

3) Alison because she ran the football field in 55 seconds.

4) Jane because she ran the football field in 1 minute.

By tears_77, at 2/16/2006 8:05 PM

Question four.

Jill is the fastest, then Jen, Alison and last is Jane.

Jill: 30 Seconds

Jen: 50 Seconds

Alison: 55 Seconds

Jane: 60 Seconds

By Aria, at 2/16/2006 8:39 PM

Answer to Teaser #3:

Jill ran the field in 30 seconds. She is the fastest.

Jen ran the field in 50 seconds. She is the second fastest.

Alison ran the field in 55 seconds. She is the second slowest.

And finally, Jane ran the field in 1 minute, which is the slowest of all.

-Cjay

By Cjay, at 2/17/2006 8:39 AM

Teaser #3

Jill: 30 seconds (fastest)

Jen : 50 seconds

Alison : 55 seconds

Jane : 1 minute which is 60 seconds (slowest)

How i got the answer:The question shows both Jill and Alison's score. 1min & 55sec. When the question says that one ran faster than the other, you just subtract the seconds they ran to the person they ran faster than.

(ex. Jen ran faster by 5sec with Alison who ran 55sec.) 55-5=50 .

A pound of salmon is worth $5.00.

A pound of bass is worth $7.00.

A pound of swordfish is worth $3.00.

A pound of catfish is worth $2.00.

How I got the answer:

I started at $3.00 for a pound of salmon and figured that if I had that for salmon, the bass would have to be $9.00, then the Swordfish would have to be $1.00. But $1 plus $3 would equal $4 and not $8. So I followed the same process until I got to $5.00 for a pound of salmon. What made it easier was knowing that the answers would be a whole dollar amount and that it didn't include any cents.=D

-wow that was a cool brain teaser........hahaha i used real objects =P
