Problem:

Mr Reece has $82.00. I'm off to the mall to do some shopping. First I buy a DVD and then some lunch, with my lunch costing half the price of the DVD. I now spends half of what I have left on a new pair of pants, leaving me with $29.75.

How much did the DVD cost?

How much did my lunch cost?

Hard Question. Would it help to work backwards?

H

By Mr. H, at 2/02/2006 6:11 AM

Yes it would help if you tried to work backwards to solve this problem.

You could try to guess the first amount as well and go from there, but this route could take you a while.

I've got the answer mr.Reece!!!! The lunch and dvd both cost $11.25. If you want to know how I got it tell me then i'll show you how I got it

The answer is $11.25. If you want to find out how i got the answer you cna ask me anytime at school. =)

By jay, at 2/02/2006 4:53 PM

So you have to post the answer here right?

By Smiiliies, at 2/02/2006 5:51 PM

This was a hard question but i think i got it the cost of the dvd was $22.50 and your lunch was $11.25

By ***$$ Wes $$***, at 2/03/2006 3:01 PM

By Levon, at 2/03/2006 3:04 PM

the DVD was 22.5

the lunch 11.25

By JayJay01, at 2/03/2006 3:07 PM

Mr.Reece, I thought I have been defeated by this math question, but my brain saved me from DOOM!!!

The DvD is $15.00, and lunch was $7.50.

All you had to do was double your remaining amount of cash and half of that would be the price of the pants. The left over money was the rest which you had to figure out!!!

Thanx for the Xtra hard question!!

By Renegade, at 2/03/2006 5:18 PM

I have the answers to your questions.

How much did the DVD cost? $15.00

How much did my lunch cost? $7.50

I had to work backwards to find the answer.First I added

$29.75 + $29.75 = $59.50 then I subtracted

$59.50 from $82.00 and my answer was $22.50 then I divided $22.50 by 3 and got answer of $7.50 which is what you spent on lunch. Then I subtracted $7.50 from $22.50 and got the answer of $15.00 which is what you spent on the DVD.

YAY!! I got the answer it was easier to work backwards. Yhe answer is 11.25. I got the answer by adding $29.75 to $29.75. So that gave me $59.50. I took that much away from $52.25thats how much it is with out the remaining $29.75. That left me with $22.50. After I divided $22.50 by 2 then it gave me $11.25. That how much it cost.

answer:the dvd cost:29.855. since that can't happen I rounded it off to 29.86. The Lunch costs 14.9275. And since that can't happen, i rounded it off to 14.93.how I got it:i subtracted 29.75 from $80.00. That left me with $52.25. Then I tried different combinations of numbers until I landed upon 29.855. I divided that by 2 and I got 14.9275. Just to double check, I divided that by 2 and I got 7.6375. Altogether the added up to 52.25.By angelic72, at 2/05/2006 2:00 PM

first of all i must say that this was really hard, & im sure that this is wrong but im gonna go with...

DVD $26.63 (madagascar?)

Lunch $13.31 (a small pizza?)

By michael_841, at 2/05/2006 2:59 PM

I feel the need to answer this question. Working backwards I went 29.75 x 2 and then got 59.50. I then suffered a brain drain and did not know what to do next. Something with 82.00 I think?

By Mr. H, at 2/05/2006 6:17 PM

Here is the answer Mr. Reece:

The DVD cost $25

The Lunch cost $12.50

P.S. the pants also cost $14.75

By tears_77, at 2/05/2006 8:40 PM

I have the answer for the "Febuary 1st homework".

7.50 for the lunch

15.00 for the dvd

and 29.75 for the pants.

The answer to the questions are $15 for the DVD and $7.50 for lunch. I got the answer by going 29.75x2. The answer was 59.50. I then went 82-59.50. That answer was 22.50. Then I went and didved 22.50 by 3. That answer was 7.50. Then I went 7.50x2. That answer was 15.

There you go, Mr. Reece, all completed.

=) Be Happy!!

I subtracted the amount before mr.r bought those things with the amount after he bought those things and got $52.25 and i divided $52.25 by 2 and got $26.12. So... the answer is:

The DVD costed: $52.25

The lunch cost: $26.12

By Jeff-, at 2/06/2006 5:54 PM

The Dvd will cost $15 and the lunch will cost $7.50

You have $29.75 so your pants cost the same. So you multiply $29.75 by 2 and you get 59.50. You then take $82 and subtract $59.50 from it. You then will get $22.50 (Your Dvd's and lunch's cost). Then you divide $22.50 by 3(because the lunch costs 1 third of $22.50),and it will be $7.50 (Your lunch's cost) Then you multiply $7.50 by 2 and it will be $15 (Your Dvd's cost, because the dvd costs double of the lunch's cost)
