Why do we use blogs?

I received a wonderful question from a teacher this past week. I dealt with the topic of plagiarism and the act of one student stealing the work of another. This fellow teacher is thinking of implementing a blog with her middle year students next year and was wondering how I dealt with students copying one another's work.

This question is something that every educator must deal with, not only in terms of blogging, as for just about any question that we pose to our students, a solution can be found on the internet and copied as their own.

The reason that I've included this post onto my blog, for all of my students to read, is that plagiarism is a topic that we have touched on in class. It is not a problem that goes away if you don't talk about it. Rather by eduacting our students on the harm of copying, and how you do not learn by simply cutting and pasting someone else's work, you instill within your students the desire to produce original work. I encourage my students to visit other websites, to read each other's solutions, but when they are solving the problem themselves, they need to solve it on their own.

Has this completely eliminated students copying eachother's work? I think that it would be foolish to expect it to have completely stopped any form of copying; but it has instilled within many of my students the view that plagiarism is wrong. Many of my students send me comments if they see that someone has copied another student's work as they truly take pride in their classroom blog. They view it as their space, and they don't want others abusing it.

Remember to take these challenges and turn them into teachable moments. Educate your students and have them take pride in their own work and this will greatly reduce the temptation to steal from one another.

Thank you for the wonderful question.

Congradulations

I just wanted to congradulate everyone for writing all of your exams this week. I know that everyone tried their best and hopefully you will be happy with your results.

The final week of school is almost upon us. Here is what is happening each day next week.

Monday - Admin day, enjoy lying in the sun and having fun with your friends
Tuesday - Activity day. We will be showing a movie in the gym in the morning, having pizza at 11am, and then leaving to go bowling at 11:45. We will be back to the school by 2:30. If you want to bring extra money to either buy some more lunch from the cafeteria, or to purchase items at the bowling alley you are encouraged. I do however recommend that you leave your valuables (cellphones etc.) at home that day.
Wednesday - Grade 7 and 8 awards in the morning.
Thursday - Grade 9 awards and grad in the morning. You are welcome to attend grade 7's
Friday - Report cards are handed out at 11:30am.

Enjoy your long weekend everyone. Remember to bring back your math textbook if you haven't already returned it, or else your parents will have to pay the cost of replacing the text.

See you on Tuesday!

Final Week of Review before exams

We are into our final week of review before exams begin on Friday.

Here is the plan for each day this week.
Monday: We will review Equivalent fractions and converting between fractions and decimals
Tuesday: We will review adding and subtracting fractions
Wednesday: We will review the number line along with adding and subtracting negative numbers
Thursday: We will review what we need to know in geometry for the final

You will be receiving from me between 2 and 4 worksheets each class. These worksheets along with your 3 point approaches act as your exam package. Do the worksheets to see where you might be having any problems, and then you can either work with a friend or come and see me during exam week in order to clear up any confusion.

Remember that you can bring with you 3 3-point approaches to your exam. you will turn in these 3-pt approaches after you have finished. Each 3-pt approach is worth 10 marks that count towards your term 3 assignment marks.

Have a great week everyone and lets make our final week a great one!

Growing Post 4: Due June 6th

Question 1: Formulas. We’ve learned how to write algebraic equations in the form of

mx + b = y. Convert these two sentences into algebraic equations using the above formula.

Sentence 1: Scott is 2 years older than Donald who turns 12 on June 21st 2006. Write this sentence in the format of mx + b = y, then convert it into an expression which allows us to figure out the age of Scott.

Sentence 2: Elizabeth has $200 in her savings account. She makes $40 every two weeks babysitting for her next door neighbours. If Elizabeth saves all of her money solve for how much money she will have in one year.

Question 2: Creation. You need to create two questions for your classmates that cover different concepts (ex: T-Charts, patterns, equations, graphs etc.) that you have learned in this unit on Algebra. You then need to show how to solve the questions. Your mark will be based upon the level of question’s difficulty, and the effort put into your answer.

Question 3: Reflection. You need to look back at the chart that we filled out during the first day of the unit. This is the chart where you coloured a topic red, yellow or green. You now need to pick one concept that you coloured yellow or red and reflect in words what new skill/idea that you have learned on this topic.

Question 4: Preparing for the final exam. You need to think about the year that has past in mathematics and decide which topic is your weakest, and what you need to learn during class review in order to prepare yourself for the final exam. It is not enough to say fractions, instead pick your weakest area of fractions, say the subtraction of fractions, and give an example of what you don’t understand.

This is our final week of Algebra, we will be starting our review for the final exam next week.
